Annual School Picnic

One of the features of St Aloysius College school life was the annual picnic, held for many years within the confines of Belair National Park. November 1, All Saints Day, the picnic’s traditional date, was keenly looked forward to by all.

In the early years, the girls, together with some of the sisters, travelled to Belair by train, the 10.30am from Adelaide arriving at Belair at midday. Long Gully was the school’s favourite spot.

In later years, the train journey was replaced by a fleet of buses. In 1938, ‘an uncle of one of the girls’ drove some more of the Sisters up, and as his car has a wireless, all those who have caught the ‘national craze’ crowded round to hear the broadcast of the Melbourne Cup.‘
