Dame Roma Mitchell Building

The building was named after old scholar, Dame Roma Mitchell, who attended St Aloysius College from 1919 to 1930 and was Dux in 1929 and 1930. She was a lawyer and a great role model for women, advocating for women’s rights, supporting equal pay for women and the right of women to sit on juries.

Barr Smith House

The Barr Smith house, next to the convent in Angas Street was purchased. This elegant brick building had been owned by Robert Barr Smith, a wealthy Adelaide businessman and his wife, Joanna. The house was a mansion and when occupied by the Sisters, became a multi-purpose facility. It housed the community kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms for elderly sisters and the ballroom became the community’s refectory. It contained the community library and a training facility for the convent novices.

September 1984

Dame Roma Mitchell Building

The Barr Smith residence was demolished to make way for the Dame Roma Mitchell Building which opened in 1984. There were eight classrooms facing Mitchell courtyard, and facing Angas Street were offices for lease on the ground and first floor. It has had several uses over time including the SA Adelaide Language Centre, the Year 12 Centre, Year 10 and various primary classrooms.

2010

Mitchell Courtyard

The construction of the Catherine McAuley Auditorium required the relocation of the playground. The Mitchell courtyard was landscaped, replacing the tennis courts with a playground, gazebo and water feature.
